Prairie Dog –

Prairie Dog –

Prairie dogs are famous and interesting to everyone except people that have them on their ranch.  Generally, you try and get rid of them since they eat all the grass and crops and turn the place into a desert.  Plus their holes are deep and can be dangerous for cows and horses to step in and break their legs.

But I still like them.  They are always busy and seem to have a personality all their own.  They will sit on their bottom like a person and stare at the sun for hours.  They raise big families and chirp when people or coyotes come around.  Lewis and Clark found one in 1804 and shipped it all the way home to President Thomas Jefferson.

This prairie dog is gathering bedding for her den.  She will have pups soon now that it is spring.
