Bobcat –

Bobcat –

It’s rare to see a bobcat in the wild, but they are everywhere.  They are stealthy and camouflaged and so are seldom observed by the average hiker or hunter.

Bobcats, somewhat like lazy-bones domestic cats, are diurnal. They prefer to hunt around sunrise and sunset, then the rest of the day stay bedded down. They get their unusual name from their short, bobbed tail.

These large cats hunt small prey like rabbits, birds, fish, and other small animals. They hunt alone using patience and sneak attacks.  About the size of a small dog or twice the size of house cats, they have no natural predators.  Don’t try and pet one and call it ‘Fluffy.’

One time I was hunting in a treestand and a bobcat came out and walked right under me.  He had no idea I was there.  He came to the pasture edge and sat down like a lion and licked his paws.  He was beautiful.
