Elk

Elk –

In the summer you see big bull elk like this all time.  They act lazy and walk around the meadows and parks and pretty much ignore you.  They are growing their antlers and this stage is called the “velvet”.  Every year they grow a new set of antlers that way, just like deer.  They rub the velvet off on small trees when the antlers are finished growing.

But in the fall, when their antlers are full grown and polished up, they turn into completely different animals.  They sneak around and you never see the big ones unless you are quiet.  All the bulls fight and the biggest bulls gather up groups of cows called “harems”.  The bulls bugle back and forth during the fall and that whistle sound is about the best sound in nature.

I love everything about elk.
